Tummy tuck which is also called as 'abdominoplasty' is a cosmetic procedure performed to correct the protruding appearance of the abdomen due to excess fat collection. During the surgery, the muscles of the abdominal wall is tightened by removing the excess fat content and skin in the lower and middle abdomen. The fat, which is stubborn to decrease through following diet and exercising can be removed from this procedure. Also, women whose skin is loosened due to past pregnancies can undergo this treatment.

This is usually done by making an incision above the pubic area from hipbone to hipbone, the naval is freed from the surrounding tissue separating the skin up to the ribs where the vertical muscles in the abdominal region are pulled close together and stitched to tighten the abdominal wall. The excess fluid is drained and the extra skin is removed.
The post-operation pain and discomfort is controlled by proper medication. The abdomen may be swollen for a few days and the result from this treatment can be made long lasting if balanced diet and proper exercises are followed. Those who are not exercising before are also adviced to follow an exercise routine.
Some of the care to be taken are if the patient is a smoker, he is to be adviced to avoid it for sometime both before and after the treatment. The operative area should not be exposed to sunlight. And should not go on any diet also taking care not to catch any type of infection or cold.
