San Diego Breast Reduction

The surgical procedure performed to decrease the size of the breasts is 'Breast reduction'. Women with large breasts suffer pain in certain parts of the body like back, shoulder and neck. To get rid of this pain they opt for breast reduction treatment. Also, women who have had surgical removal of cancerous breast tissue, opt for this procedure. Not only women but also men who have enlarged breasts go for this treatment. It is also called as 'reduction mammoplasty'.

The Procedure

Incisions are usually made in the areola region extending downward and around the underside of the breast. Excess tissue, fat and skin are removed and the nipple and the areola are given a proper position. In certain cases, liposuction is carried out to achieve the results. This procedure is same for both men and women.

After the surgery, an elastic bandage or supportive bra specially designed for this purpose is placed over the guaze bandages and drainage tubes. Scars remain red for several months and gradually fade.

Breast reduction surgery is not recommended for women whose breasts are not fully developed or who plan to breastfeed.

Risks that are involved are bleeding, infection, anesthesia reactions or unexpected scarring. This reduction procedure may decrease the feeling in the breasts and nipples or difficulty in breastfeeding.

The result that should be achieved is the breast size should be small and the accompanying pain and discomfort should come down improving the self esteem in both men and women who undertake this reduction treatment.

Deaths that occur after this treatment are very rare. Though it occurs, it is due to anesthesia errors, overdoses of pain medications or post-operative infections. In very rare cases if the skin of the breast or nipple does not heal properly, an additional surgery is required to graft the skin.
