San Diego Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure, which enhances the size and shape of a woman's breast, by inserting an implant which is a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or salt-water solution which is known as saline.

The Procedure:

Incisions are made either in the crease, around the nipple or in the armpit. Breast tissue and skin is lifted in such a way that it creates a pocket-like area for the implant. The breast implant may be inserted directly under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle.

Like many other surgeries, there are risks associated with this procedure, which is explained below:

  1. Capsular contracture: This is a situation where the scar or capsule around the implant begins to tighten where the breast is felt hard. This can be treated by either removal of the scar tissue or removal or replacement of the implant.

  2. Swelling and pain due to excessive bleeding after the operation: In this case another operation may be required to control the bleeding.

  3. Developing infection around the implant: Though this may occur anytime, it is often seen within a week after the surgery. For this, the implant needs to be removed until the infection clears which may take for several months and then a new implant can be inserted.

  4. Oversensitiveness, undersensitiveness or numbness of the nipple: This usually disappears in due course but in some patients it might be permanent.

These breast implants does not cause breast cancer. But when going for a routine mammogram, it is better to go to a radiology center where technicians are experienced in the special techniques required to get an x-ray of a breast with an implant. The patient may be given a surgical bra. The patient may experience a burning sensation in the nipples, which comes down as the surgical wound heals.
